My name is Kirsty and I work as an online counsellor. I have been working as a counsellor since 2008, qualifying in 2010 and setting up my own counselling practice this same year. I am an accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and work within the BACP Ethical Framework within all counselling sessions. I am a certified professional member of ACTO (Association for Counselling and Therapy Online) and have been working with clients online from 2020.
My path into counselling began back in 2005 when I started an introduction evening course. This was an interesting time for me as I began thinking about what path I wanted to pursue in my life. From attending this course, I realised I wanted to work with people, to support and help them and to make sense of life.
I started studying for my counselling qualification in 2007. I completed my training alongside working as a group work officer in a secure unit within the NHS, working with men with dangerous and severe personality disorders. During this period I began building my foundations as a therapist and focusing on who I am, stepping into the client’s chair and starting my own personal journey. This was a difficult but amazing time for me in my life, with many highs and lows to give me focus and energy.
I undertook counsellings placements as a trainee counsellor, gaining experience working with many different client groups including young people within a school and college, a counselling service and also with adult’s within a GP environment. During my training, I studied many theories from psychologists which I use with clients during sessions, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis and Person Centered.
Once I became qualified I created my own counselling practice called Morgan Walker Counselling. I work in Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, offering counselling to young people, individuals and couples. I work with many different client issues ranging from relationship and family, life changes, domestic violence and sexual abuse, depression, anxiety and loss and grief.
For me, being a counsellor means making that voice feel heard, understood and not judged. It means giving to another as you wish to be received, with care, support and respect. To give yourself to another in a therapeutic manner will evoke change within the relationship and make that personal journey begin.
Thinking about and then going into individual counselling can be one of the hardest decisions a person can make. For you to realise that things are not how you wish them to be and to want to make a change is for most, the beginning of this journey. With counselling, it’s all about journeys, journeys towards positive growth, recovery and self-empowerment. As a counsellor I recognise the courage it takes to make these changes and I am here to help support you on your journey.
As a counsellor, I am not here to give advice, but to listen and help you question the way you look at things, the way you behave or react to situations or people and also help you to develop new strategies for dealing with your situation. As individual counselling sessions progress, I will get to know you, develop an understanding of your circumstances, listening to what you have to say and offer support and insight. The individual sessions will go at your pace, with us working on whatever you wish to bring to each appointment.
I work using an integrated model of counselling. I will often use psychodynamic concepts within my work but value the influences of transactional analysis (TA), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness and person-centred approaches. The aims within these theories is to develop insight into the true nature of your difficulties and the origins of them. I am committed to providing a safe, non-judgemental therapeutic environment for my clients, which allows you to speak with myself in a confidential way. I have the fullest commitment to offering a service which is welcoming to all backgrounds in a supportive and non-discriminatory manner. In our work together you will be speaking with somebody on a neutral level, who doesn’t know you and who won’t judge you or tell you what is best for you. Counselling is about offering support and enabling you to find your own answers and solutions to your questions. I am here to help you to talk about whatever is bothering you, to work with you to understand why you feel how you do and how best to manage your experiences.
