I'm a fully trained counselling psychotherapist, offering private individual therapy on an ongoing or short-term basis. I use an integration of the psychodynamic/psychoanalytic methods and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), to best help you feel better. It can be difficult to find a space to reflect and I offer a secure, non-judgemental, confidential environment, where together we can find that space for you. Professional member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and ACTO.
I am very patient, and understand that taking that first step towards counselling, and beginning to make changes can be very difficult and I'll do my very best to support you. I have undergone long-term therapy myself and know what it feels like, and what it brings up - you will not be alone in this process. I know it’s not easy, opening up about your troubles, but you should expect to be treated with compassion and respect, you will not be judged here. I continue to attend weekly therapy - I do not believe I can ask you to do something I am not doing myself. Short-term and long-term or open-ended treatment options available.
I specialise in people who experience low self-worth, this is usually due to trauma of some kind, and my passion is to watch clients grow from fearful, scared and self-loathing behaviours and relationships - to confident, capable, decisive and content individuals.
I can help with bereavement, bullying, career change, crisis, breakdown and depression, anxiety, negative thinking, problems of motivation, low self confidence, difficulty making decisions, anger, addiction, emotional abuse, existential anxiety, health issues, HIV and advanced HIV, family relationship problems, life changes, identity issues, LGBT issues, sexuality and sexual identity, migration/diaspora issues, retirement, serious illness, self-sabotage, sexual abuse, substance misuse, trauma and psychosis.
I work to your pace and believe we can all make the changes we wish to see, with patience and understanding for ourselves. Therapy should build confidence in your abilities and relationships but takes time - clients describe getting to know themselves for the first time, this can be both a good experience and a challenging one, but ultimately rewarding. I take an integrative approach, incorporating elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Above all, I believe in a compassion focused approach to ourselves and our feelings and behaviours.
My clinical training (BSc in Short-term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and CBT) was completed at the University of London (Birkbeck College) over the course of 5 years in total.
My training emphasised the importance of key areas:
Therapist self-development in ongoing personal therapy, which I continue to this day.
Researched and up-to-date treatment models, backed up with evidence.
The role of group dynamics and social issues on our mental health, at a personal and existential level.
The importance of diversity and inclusion at every level of our global societies, including the counselling professions, and the need to acknowledge our own prejudices.
At all times the clients best interests are preserved.
