Hi, my name’s Ed, I’m a Therapist and Clinical Supervisor. I work in the NHS as well as privately online nationally, and in West London. I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties including (but not limited to) complex trauma and dissociation, suicidal ideation, and self-harm. I work relationally integrating a range of different therapies dependent on someone’s needs. I draw primarily from DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy), Psychodynamic and EMDR Therapy. I also run an Online Coping Skills Group which teaches DBT skills around Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness (boundaries and communication skills).

I currently work two and a half days per week in private practice, while also continuing to work for the NHS in a Community Mental Health Team. As a Practitioner I belong to the BACP who are my professional body. I am a ‘Registered Member’, this means that I abide by their ethical framework while working as an Integrative Therapist and that I undertake frequent continuing professional development to keep up to date with current practice while also receiving regular supervision to make sure my work is clinically safe. A copy of the commitments we make as members of the BACP while working therapeutically can be found by clicking here

Experience

  • Adult Psychotherapist & Counsellor – West London NHS Trust, providing both long term individual Psychotherapy & Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to individuals and groups.
  • Extensive experience working within an NHS Crisis Team and previously as a Mental Health Advisor on an NHS crisis line.
  • Prior to working within mental health services, I worked for an NHS Ambulance Service, both operationally and in control.

The model of therapy that I offer draws primarily on psychodynamic and person-centred theory, focusing on the therapeutic relationship while we work together, providing a safe space to be able to think about what has brought you to therapy and offering you time to reflect on how you might begin to move forward.

Dependent on what brings you to therapy now, I can also draw on specific types of therapy and have training in Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness should we both feel any of these approaches would be relevant to our work together.

EMDR is particularly useful when working with someone who has experienced trauma and may have difficulty speaking about what has happened because it causes them to have flashbacks or to become overwhelmed. EMDR is a way of reducing the intensity of flashbacks and the emotions associated with traumatic memories without necessarily needing to talk about it, it works by helping someone process what has happened to them.

However if someone feels unsafe day to day it can be helpful to learn new ways of coping in the here and now before we consider doing any other work. In this case Dialectical Behaviour Therapy can be really useful. DBT is quite a practical therapy, which helps people to build a life worth living by learning skills to address what might be getting in the way. Over the course of therapy people learn to develop skills around distress tolerance (crisis skills), interpersonal effectiveness (people and communication skills), emotion regulation (how to manage strong feelings) and mindfulness (which helps us to stay present rather than getting stuck in the past or anxious about the future).

Generally DBT is offered by a group of therapists rather than one, which is why it’s often hard to access outside of the NHS, also it’s not usually a type of therapy that Counsellors or Psychotherapists train in.

The reason that DBT is offered as a group therapy is due to the evidence base. When Marsha Linehan developed the therapy the best outcomes where seen when people learnt skills in a group setting which is how most Community Mental Health Teams have gone on to offer the therapy. However people can still do well learning skills on a one to one basis, if they are not able or ready to join a group, it may just take longer and needs adapting. Typically full provision DBT involves three parts, weekly Skills Group, weekly Individual session and phone coaching in-between. As an individual practitioner I offer DBT informed weekly sessions and in partnership with Liminal Therapies I also facilitate a Coping Skills Group, more details about the group can be found on my website.

Online Supervisor Profile

I offer clinical supervision to Counsellors and Psychotherapists both qualified and in training who work with adults (18+), concession rates are available for trainee therapists. I do not supervise work with children.
In terms of modalities that I work with and have experience of, my own initial training focused on Petruska Clarkson’s Five Relationship Model which integrates a range of theories drawing significantly from psychodynamic and relational approaches. I also have an interest in other models of therapy including Internal Family Systems, the work of Janina Fisher, Somatic interventions and EMDR. Since qualifying I have undertaken further training specialising in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
I currently work as a Counsellor in a Secondary Care DBT Team in the NHS working both with individuals and groups. This work is primarily with people who have experienced complex trauma, and before that, five years in a crisis team providing crisis intervention.
Alongside my NHS work, I also have a thriving private practice and I’m happy to support newly qualified Therapists as they begin their journey into private practice and support them to develop this area of their practice, both the exciting opportunities this might provide and also the challenges of working independently.
Please get in touch if you would like to arrange to meet so we can see how we might be able to work together.

The model of supervision that I offer is based on the Seven Eyed model by Peter Hawkins and Robin Shohet. This model offers supervision from both relational and systemic perspectives by looking at seven different aspects:

1. Focusing on the clients and exploring what and how they present
2. Exploring the strategies and interventions used by the therapist when working with the client
3. Focussing on the relationship between the client and the supervisee
4. Focussing on the supervisee
5. Focussing on the supervisory relationship
6. The supervisor focussing on their own experience
7. Focusing on the wider context in which the work happens – considering the system the client finds themselves in
