Words others have used to describe me include “sensitive, thoughtful, resourceful, committed and empathic”. I am straightforward, kind and sensitive with years of experience supporting a wide range of people with a wide range of issues. You will be met with gentleness, calmness, compassion and steadfastness. As an integrative therapist I draw on a range of approaches which I use flexibly, working with you to find a way forward which works for you.
.
I first became involved with counselling as a psychologist in the 1980’s when I set up and ran a large counselling service. Over the years I have supported people from all walks of life with a wide range of physical, emotional and mental health issues and continued to study, continually updating my knowledge and skills. I have experience of working with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties to name just a few. I have volunteered with CRUSE working with grief and loss and continue to volunteer for a community counselling service as well as running my own practice. I have been a family carer for over 25 years and have experience of supporting other carers.
My approach is to remain flexible and responsive to what comes up for you as we get to know each other and I come to understand more about what brings you. From this beginning we will clarify what it is you would like to get from your work with me and agree a way forward. I put you at the centre of everything we do and will use knowledge from a range of approaches to help you to understand why those things that trouble you do so and explore options for responding to what you learn from this. I encourage you to become curious about what led you to the distress which brings you to therapy and to experiment with a range of options to find the best way forward.
To do this I draw on a range of tried and tested approaches based in current researched evidence, including, but not limited to, person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and attachment theory. I combine these, together with a knowledge of other therapies, to tailor my work to your needs. I value a collaborative approach, where you remain in control of your counselling at all times, you decide what you do and don't want to work on, and I bring a range of knowledge and skills to help you explore and understand what troubles you and decide what you would like to do next as you work towards improved well-being and effective, positive change. The counselling and psychotherapy I offer is continuously monitored by trained supervisors to ensure that I am providing you with the best therapy I can and that my work meets the exacting standards and ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
