I am a qualified counsellor with over 20 years experience of face -to face and telephone counselling. More recently I have trained and gained more experience of working online using video and other remote ways of offering counselling and have completed online therapy training in 2020 and 2021.
I am an accredited member of BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). I am on the BACP register as a Registered Member MBACP (Snr Accred). I completed my counselling training in Manchester and after qualifying in 1998 I moved to Northern Ireland and have worked here as a counsellor in a number of settings ever since. These include within the voluntary and community sector and I have worked with a range of client issues such as anxiety, depression, abuse, addiction, trauma, young people and family/relationship problems. Since 2010 I have been self-employed and have a small private practice in Belfast. I also work part-time for a voluntary agency where I provide counselling to young people aged 16-25 years old. who are care experienced or have housing issues. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for good practice and the BACP Guidelines for Online Counselling and Psychotherapy More information on these documents can be found at: https://www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/ethical-framework-for-the-counselling-professions/ https://www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/good-practice-in-action/gpia047-working-online-fs/ Online counselling may be able to help with a wide range of issues including, abuse, anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, loneliness, relationship problems, bereavement, self-esteem, sexual orientation, sexual abuse, discrimination, and many more difficulties that are faced in life. Not all types of issues can be resolved through online counselling and I will advise you if face to face counselling, or some other form of support might be more suitable for you. Where I consider that online counselling would not be the most suitable means of support, I will make every effort to assist you in a referral to a suitable alternative source of support. I am not able to provide online counselling to any person who is under the age of 18 or who is in crisis. If this applies to you, I can help with information on referral to other agencies providing face to face counselling services who offer crisis support, or if you are under 18, to online services which are specifically directed to a younger age group.
My aim is to provide a welcoming, safe and supportive space for you to explore your story so that you feel heard and understood. I am an integrative counsellor which means that I tailor the therapy to suit your unique needs drawing on a range of theories and techniques from different approaches. My initial training as a person-centred counsellor has been enhanced by further training in family therapy, addictions and Inner Child Therapy which I incorporate into the therapy to best meet your requirements.
However, the person-centred approach remains the core of my work. This means that I aim to understand and empathise with your experience without judgement to enable you to meet your full potential. This approach has the philosophy that each person is the best expert on themselves therefore, I listen to you what you wish to work on in therapy and I take my lead from you regarding the content and pace of the sessions. I feel that this provides the foundation for a trusting therapeutic relationship which can help you to make changes in your life and achieve your personal goals. Please feel free to contact me to explore your requirements to see if you think we will work well together.
I work with adults from age 18 years old on a 1-2 basis.
